Device transfer

Moves a report you are part-way through onto another device — a tablet to a phone, a work device to your own, a dying battery to a charged one.

Using it​

  1. On the device holding the report, open Transfer in the sidebar. A QR code and a one-time code appear.
  2. On the receiving device, open MedJot and scan the code, or type it in.
  3. The report arrives.

What happens underneath​

This is the one time report content is sent to our server, and it is worth being precise about how:

  • The report is held in memory only — never written to disk, never written to a database.
  • It sits under a one-time code for a maximum of 10 minutes.
  • After that it is deleted automatically and permanently.
  • You can delete it yourself as soon as the second device has picked it up.

The code is short-lived and single-use by design, and the codes themselves avoid ambiguous characters — no O/0 or I/l/1 confusion when someone is reading one aloud.

What transfers​

The report in progress: findings, observations, ingestions, free text, scores.

The notepad is not part of the report and does not transfer. Neither do your settings — they follow your account when you sign in.

Requirements​

Both devices need a connection, unlike almost everything else in MedJot. There is no offline transfer; the handoff goes through the server. If you are somewhere with no signal, finish the report on the device you have.

Both devices must be signed in to the same account.

If it fails​

  • Code expired — they last 10 minutes. Generate a new one.
  • Code already used — one-time by design. Generate a new one.
  • Camera will not scan — type the code in instead; that route always works.
  • Nothing happens on the receiving device — check both are online. See The connection indicator.

Repeated rapid attempts are rate-limited to prevent code guessing, so if you have generated several in quick succession, wait a moment.

Before you transfer​

The receiving device keeps the report in its browser storage like any other. Transferring to a shared or personal device puts clinical content there until it is cleared. Transfer to the device you are going to finish and file on, and reset when you are done.
