How reports work
The report writes itself
There is no "generate" step. Every finding you tap and every note you type updates the report text in the right-hand panel immediately. What you see there during the assessment is the finished article.
This is deliberate: a documentation tool where you assess first and write afterwards is one where you write afterwards, which is exactly when the detail has gone.
Tri-state findings
Every clinical finding cycles through three states, not two. Tap it repeatedly:
not assessed → positive → negative → not assessed → …
- Not assessed is the starting state, and it prints nothing.
- Positive means the finding is present.
- Negative means you assessed it and it is absent.
The distinction between "not assessed" and "negative" is the most important thing in the app. A record saying you found no chest pain when you never asked is a false record, and one that MedJot will not produce. Wherever a score, a summary or an AI tool encounters an unassessed finding, it treats it as unknown — never as normal.
Because a third tap returns a finding to not-assessed, an accidental tap is always fully undoable. Nothing gets stuck on a value you did not mean.
Changing the symbols
The characters used for positive and negative are a preference. Settings → General lets you pick the pair you are used to reading, and the report text follows.
Free text
Every section carries its own free-text field for anything the tap targets do not cover. Use it — the structured options exist to make the common case fast, not to constrain what you can say.
Free text is yours. The only thing that ever rewrites it is Text assist, which you invoke explicitly, and which may only re-express what you already wrote.
Editing the report by hand
Sometimes the generated wording is not what you want. In the Live Preview panel, lock the report: the text becomes editable, and from that point tapping findings no longer overwrites it.
This is a one-way door for that report — once you have taken manual control, MedJot stops regenerating, because otherwise your edit would vanish the next time you tapped anything. Unlock to return to generated text, at the cost of the manual edits.
Autosave
Everything saves automatically to the device as you work — into the browser's local storage, with a second copy in an on-device database. A refresh, a crash, a dropped signal or a phone that reboots mid-shift does not lose the report.
Autosave is controlled by a single switch in Settings → General, on by default.
Autosave writes to your device only. Nothing is uploaded, backed up to us, or synced to another device. If you clear your browser's site data, the report goes with it. To move a report between devices, use Device transfer.
Starting a new report
New Report in the sidebar clears the form after asking you to confirm. This also:
- resets the elapsed-time clock in the header;
- clears the notepad and the tool inputs, and stops the stopwatch and timer;
- discards any queued AI request, because a queued request describes a patient who is no longer in front of you;
- keeps your window layout and settings, which are preferences rather than report content.
What counts as "starting" a report
MedJot considers a report started at the moment it stops being blank — the first finding, the first note, the first anything. That moment starts the header clock and, on a free account, counts against the daily free report limit.
Choosing a NEWS2 scale does not count, because it is a setup choice rather than report content, and a report you have not written anything in yet should not spend a free report.
