Overdose calculator

In the toolbox. It works out mg/kg for a dose a patient has already taken, across one or more medications at once.

What it is for, and what it is not​

This tool does arithmetic on an ingestion that has already happened. It is not a dosing calculator — MedJot has no tool that tells you what to give, and the one it used to have was removed deliberately. A dose to give is a clinical decision belonging to JRCALC or the BNF; a dose already taken is a number you need multiplied by a weight, under pressure, without making an error.

The tool carries no drug data of its own. There is no built-in threshold table, no toxic-dose reference and no drug list — and there will not be. A calculator that names a figure gets read as a reference, and a figure recalled from an app at 3am is not a source.

Using it​

  1. Enter the patient's weight. Once, shared by every row.
  2. Add a medication — its name, the amount taken, and optionally when.
  3. Optionally enter a threshold from TOXBASE or NPIS.

The tool returns mg/kg. If you supplied a threshold, it also tells you where the ingestion sits relative to it.

Nothing is defaulted​

If the tool has not been given enough to answer, it returns no answer and tells you what is missing. It never assumes 70 kg. A calculator that quietly invents a weight is worse than no calculator, and this is the same rule the rest of MedJot follows.

Time taken is free text​

Deliberately. 14:30, approx 2 hours ago and found at 0900, unclear when are all real, useful answers, and a time picker would force a guess about exactly the thing — staggered versus acute — that changes the assessment most.

The threshold comparison stays on screen​

If you enter a threshold, the comparison it produces is shown to you and goes no further. It does not reach the ePRF, the PDF or the AI tools.

A threshold you typed from memory or from a page you half-read must not become a clinical judgement in the patient's record. What reaches the record is what was taken and what that is per kilogram — facts — not a verdict.

And below a threshold the tool says "below", never "safe".

What does reach the record​

The weight and the ingestions are report data, not tool scratch. They appear:

  • In the ePRF, under History of Presenting Complaint, as Pt weight - … and Ingestion - … lines. Each entry has its own include-in-report toggle, exactly like observation sets.
  • In the reflective practice PDF, in their own table — and there the toggle is ignored, because that export records what was taken rather than what you pasted into a trust system.
  • In the AI tools, as context.
  • In the Presenting Complaint section, shown read-only, so you can see them in clinical context. The toolbox is the one place they are edited.

Because they are report data, ingestions and the weight are cleared by New Report, not by closing the tool.
